Gardeners Carshalton Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Carshalton is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, clients and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all work sites where we provide garden care, landscaping and related services.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health arising from our operations. Our objectives are to identify hazards, assess risks and implement effective control measures so that gardening tasks, use of equipment and movement of materials are carried out safely and responsibly.
Health and safety is an integral part of how we plan, carry out and review our work. All personnel are required to follow the procedures in this policy and any additional site-specific safety instructions provided by supervisors or clients.
Legal Responsibilities
Gardeners Carshalton will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and industry guidance applicable to gardening, grounds maintenance and light landscaping activities. We will keep this policy and associated procedures under regular review to ensure they remain up to date and reflect best practice in our sector.
Management accepts overall responsibility for health and safety performance, while every employee and contractor has a duty to take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions at work.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting tasks, we assess the risks associated with gardening activities, such as lawn cutting, hedge trimming, tree and shrub care, chemical use, waste handling and the use of powered machinery.
Where necessary, site-specific risk assessments are carried out to consider ground conditions, access routes, traffic, slopes, weather, nearby structures, public areas and any vulnerable persons who may be present. From these assessments we develop safe systems of work, which are communicated to the team and monitored by supervisors.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Carshalton ensures that all employees and regular contractors receive appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision to perform their roles safely. This includes:
Induction on our health and safety procedures and emergency arrangements. Task-specific training for the safe operation of lawn mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws and other machinery as required. Guidance on safe manual handling, correct use of ladders and safe working at low heights. Training on the safe handling, storage and application of any approved pesticides, fuels or other substances.
We only permit competent and authorised persons to operate machinery and equipment. Supervisors are responsible for checking that instructions are followed and that any concerns about safety are addressed promptly.
Use, Maintenance and Storage of Equipment
We provide tools and equipment that are suitable for their intended use and kept in safe working order. Regular inspections and maintenance are carried out and recorded where appropriate. Any defective equipment is removed from service until repaired or replaced.
Fuel, oils and chemicals are stored securely and used only in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety data. We avoid unnecessary noise and vibration by selecting appropriate equipment and using it correctly.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be eliminated by other means, Gardeners Carshalton provides suitable personal protective equipment. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, helmets, high-visibility clothing and weather-appropriate outerwear.
Employees are required to wear issued protective equipment as instructed and to report any loss, damage or faults so that replacements can be arranged. Protective equipment is not a substitute for safe working practices but a final layer of protection.
Safe Handling of Plants, Soil and Waste
We recognise that gardening work can involve exposure to soil, plant material, organic waste, sharp objects and potential allergens. We adopt safe handling procedures to minimise the risk of cuts, infections and other harm.
Green waste, soil and debris are collected, stored and transported in a manner that prevents spillage, manual handling injuries or environmental contamination. Where possible, we promote reuse, recycling and responsible disposal of all waste arising from our work.
Control of Substances
Any use of pesticides, herbicides or other controlled substances is carefully managed and carried out only by trained personnel. We use products that are appropriate for the task and apply them in line with manufacturer guidance and regulatory requirements.
We seek to minimise chemical use, consider non-chemical alternatives wherever feasible and take all reasonable steps to protect people, animals, plants and watercourses from unintended exposure.
Working With the Public and On Client Premises
Our teams regularly work in residential gardens and shared outdoor spaces. We plan our activities to minimise risk to clients, visitors, neighbours and passers-by.
Work areas are kept as tidy as reasonably practicable, with tools and machinery positioned safely when in use and securely stored when not in use. Where necessary, we use warning signs, barriers or temporary cones to alert people to work in progress.
Emergency Procedures, Accidents and Near Misses
Gardeners Carshalton maintains emergency procedures appropriate to the nature and scale of our operations. All personnel are expected to familiarise themselves with these arrangements and to act promptly and calmly if an incident occurs.
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. We investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Health, Welfare and Occupational Health
We recognise that gardening is physically demanding and often carried out in varying weather conditions. We encourage sensible pacing of work, regular breaks, hydration and the use of appropriate clothing and sun protection.
Where work may involve repetitive actions or significant manual handling, we promote correct techniques and the use of mechanical aids where practicable to reduce the risk of strains and other musculoskeletal injuries.
Environmental Considerations
Health and safety and environmental protection are closely linked in our operations. We plan work to protect soil, plants, wildlife and water features on our clients gardens, taking care to avoid damage and unnecessary disturbance.
By managing noise, dust, fumes and waste responsibly, we aim to maintain a pleasant and safe outdoor environment for everyone in the areas where we operate.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
We consult with employees and, where relevant, clients on matters affecting health and safety. Feedback and suggestions for improving our practices are encouraged and will be considered as part of our commitment to ongoing improvement.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our activities, equipment or applicable regulations. Updated versions will be communicated to all staff and made available to clients on request.
